Review Design

Background

Mumli is a social media app connects pregnancy women and mums with the resources, content, and product when they need them. When I first joined Mumli, the foundation of the app was being built and Mumli was an early-stage product with room for significant improvement, the first thing I did was provide a comprehensive UX/UI review and audit to establish our UX strategy.

Audit and Review

I began by speaking with our VIP users who were invited to the app and gathered data from Mixpanel to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation. Based on this analysis, I outlined the UX strategy. You can access the full audit review here.

Part 1: Redesign the creation flow

Review the "Post Creation" feature by reviewing the usage number

What I understood: Although Mumli was still in its early stages with a limited number of users (all invited to join), the data already provided insights into user experience. For example, one core feature allows users to create posts, but the data indicated a decreasing number of posts being created.

What I suggested: We should inspire users on what to share and post by introducing "Mother's Moments." This could involve providing scenarios for celebrating pregnancy milestones or birth delivery, encouraging users to engage more actively by sharing their own experiences.

Review Previous design and UX issues

Before the redesign, checking the existing design and review the ux issues

Pain points:

  • Multiple actions are required on the editing page, causing a loss of focus on the primary task.
  • The editing space is too limited. When the keyboard is triggered, it becomes even harder to edit, discouraging users from creating long-form content.
  • The collection title is cluster and uneasy to read smoothly. The eye ball has to look at the collections in a Z shape

Set Up Design Guideline

Usability Testing and Result

I set up few usability tests on UserTesting.com, inviting 10 users per design version and inviting Australia moms to test on the prototype. Additionally, I included a question in our app to gather input from our existing users. Here is the result and findings:

The Final Design

  • I enlarged the editing space to help users focus more on their content.
  • Additionally, we broke the posting flow into two pages: the first page focuses on content creation, while the second page handles tagging and grouping.

Part 2: User Engagement & User Generated Content (UGC)

What I understood: Users are more inclined to read quietly rather than comment or react. Reacting is a simpler form of engagement, but it is less utilized compared to commenting, as users tend to be less active with reactions.

What I suggest: To encourage more user engagement, we should create momentum by implementing regular "Ask Me Anything" sessions and grouping users based on common backgrounds to foster social connections and encourage them to follow each other's posts. For instance, we could group users by their delivery month and suggest posts based on shared experiences and backgrounds.

Feature Usage

Conduct User interview

Outlining the user journey helped us define the types of posts we can offer to end users.

Create User Persona

By creating user personas, we can better understand the doubts and concerns of pregnant women at various stages of pregnancy. This insight will allow us to develop a more targeted content strategy tailored to each stage, addressing specific needs, questions, and anxieties they may have throughout their pregnancy journey.

Recommendation from Colleague

Elaine is a skilled and passionate product designer who is a true expert at her craft. She regularly simplifies complex issues, data and problems to provide simple and elegant solutions the whole team understands, agrees with and can get behind. Elaine is incredibly organised, deeply driven and consistently agile. Her abilities to both oversee project requirements and analyse company / product data sets Elaine above the rest. I worked alongside Elaine in the design team at Mumli throughout most of 2022 and my experiences with her were beyond anything I could have asked for. She was a patient, insightful, inspiring leader who openly shared her wealth of knowledge with me on a daily basis. She allowed me to learn and grow alongside her, always offering support when needed, but allowed me space to self learn at other times. I was continuously inspired by Elaines curiosity, thought process and drive when it came to her abilities as a product designer. I would highly recommend Elaine to any company looking for a truly brilliant Senior Product Designer / Manager and an all around great person who would be an asset to have on any team.
